In this passage from the book of Luke, we find Jesus’s instruction in and example for times of darkness and despair. It was Jesus’s custom to pray at the Mount of Olives. And as it was his custom, he knew full well that he would be found there. He did not try to escape the darkness coming. The instruction from Jesus to us in dark times is that we pray so that we may not enter into temptation. And if Christ and the disciples needed to pray in moments of temptation, how much more vital is it that that we would pray in our times of darkness. Jesus is our example. He understands our loneliness, our fears, our faith, our weaknesses and our suffering. Are we preparing ourselves now, in the good times, for the dark times, through prayer?
