What is a Sabbatical?

A sabbatical is an extended period of rest, rejuvenation, and reconnection with God and with family, and it’s considered a “best practice” in healthy churches to send pastors on sabbaticals periodically. There are studies that show sabbaticals result in greater health and greater non-staff leadership involvement in churches that follow this practice.

Why is Pastor Phil going on Sabbatical?

There is no crisis in Phil’s life that is necessitating this sabbatical. We are instead making a long- term investment into the health and vitality of Phil and his family. We want the future years of Phil’s life and ministry here at Grace to be even more fruitful than the years he has already invested in our church family. This sabbatical is meant to result in Pastor Phil’s thriving, the health of his family, and even the health and vitality of our church as a whole.

How long is Pastor Phil on Sabbatical?

It will start on May 12th and end August 11th 2019

What will he be doing?

He will spend his time resting, recharging, and being with his family. The majority of the time will be spent away from Bend to allow Pastor Phil to disconnect from the pressures of ministry.

Is he coming back?

Absolutely. Pastor Phil will not be seeking any other position or speaking at any other ministries throughout this sabbatical. He’s resting and recharging, that’s all.

What is the plan while he is gone?

Things will look much the same at Grace. We have a gifted team of Pastors & Elders who will continue to preach the gospel on Sundays. We also have some very exciting guest speakers coming to bless us with their ministry, and you won’t want to miss it. Church functions will continue, and our talented church staff will continue to serve us in the day to day operations of a growing, healthy church.

Can I contact Pastor Phil while he is away?

We ask that you would respect this time of rest for Pastor Phil. Please don’t anticipate a response from his email or Facebook. Pastor Phil will be disconnecting from all email, social media, and work related phone calls during this time.

What if I have spiritual questions?

Spiritual leadership at Grace has always been carried by all our leaders. Our CG leaders, staff, and Elders are here to love and serve you in your spiritual growth. If there is any spiritual need you have we hope you will begin by contacting your CG leader. If there is any urgent or critical need the Elders and staff will be happy to serve you.

What can I do to help?

  1. Pray for Pastor Phil and his family—that this time would be refreshing for them, and that Pastor Phil would experience rest in his soul and intimacy with our Heavenly Father.
  2. Continue to take steps in your own spiritual growth and discipleship and love Jesus more.
  3. Welcome new people into the church family while Pastor Phil is away and love and encourage one another in the Lord.
