In August of 2017, the McKay family will begin a new season of gospel ministry in Central Oregon. As the Church Plant Resident at Grace Bible Church of Bend, we will partner with Grace for 12-18 months for training and equipping with the goal of planting a gospel-centered church in Redmond, Oregon.

Why Church Planting?

Church planting naturally flows from the command Jesus gave to his followers in Matthew 28:19-20, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” The disciple-making movement that Jesus began is all about multiplication, therefore church planting is a natural by-product of healthy churches.

Dr. Timothy Keller said, “The vigorous, continual planting of new congregations is the single most crucial strategy for 1) the numerical growth of the body of Christ in any city, and 2) the continual corporate renewal and revival of the existing churches in a city. Nothing else—not crusades, outreach programs, para-church ministries, growing mega-churches, congregational consulting, nor church renewal processes—will have the consistent impact of dynamic, extensive church planting. This is an eyebrow raising statement. But to those who have done any study at all, it is not even controversial.”

The disciple-making movement that Jesus began is the vision passed on to Christ’s disciples, carried out by the apostle Paul and many others, and remains the need today for the advancement of the gospel to the glory of God.

Why Redmond?

Redmond is one of the fastest growing cities in the fastest growing county in our state. As I connected with Grace Bible Church of Bend, it became clear to Crystal and me that the need to plant a church in Redmond was not only a natural outflow of Grace Bible’s commitment to the disciple-making movement that Jesus began, but it is a crucial next step toward greater Kingdom growth and advancement of the gospel in Central Oregon.

Why are we transitioning?

We are not leaving Lebanon First Baptist, but are being sent with the full support and affirmation of the elders and congregation. LFB is partnering in the church plant in a significant way, and through this partnership between two healthy churches we look to plant a new gospel-centered church in Redmond, Oregon. Both churches will be providing much of our support, but we are left with $1,250 per month that still needs to be raised. I am looking for people to make an 18-month commitment beginning August 2017, to be re-evaluated when the Redmond Church Plant launches. Financial and ministry updates will be provided throughout the process. All money contributed will be used to support the McKay family and the Redmond Church Plant. Please see below for more ways to support this ministry.

This vision will only be possible through the grace of God, the leading of the Holy Spirit, and the partnership of believers to faithfully proclaim the gospel and make disciples who can make disciples.

Western Seminary (2007-2010)

After graduating from the University of Oregon, John began a Master of Divinity degree at Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon. After a year of commuting from Eugene once a week, the McKays moved to Portland so that John could be a full-time student. John and Crystal were both able to work full-time while John finished his degree, graduating in the spring of 2010. That same year their family grew by one as Simon was born on February 13, 2010.

Lebanon First Baptist Church (2011 -2017)

After graduating from Western Seminary, God called the McKay family to Lebanon First Baptist Church in Lebanon, Oregon. John served as the Associate Pastor, overseeing the Home Communities. John worked with the small group leaders to support the growth and health of the church. He also helped preach, taught Sunday School classes, and oversaw a transition with the children’s ministry at the church. With a heart for people, John faithfully preached the Word of God, continuing the disciple-making movement that Jesus began. He is passionate about helping people experience the peace and joy that are found in Christ, and walking with people to mature in their faith as followers of Christ. While in Lebanon, the McKay family continued to grow. Joining Simon (now age 7), is Mark (now age 5), and Nathaniel (now age 2). Their time in Lebanon has been an incredible blessing, primarily because of their church family. The LFB crew has always been there to support, encourage, and challenge the McKays to grow as they have partnered in ministry as proclaimers of the good news of Jesus. While the transition to Redmond is extremely sad, it is also exciting to see how God has been at work not only in preparing the McKays, but also preparing LFB to continue building a vibrant disciple-making ministry in Lebanon to the glory of God.

Grace Bible Church of Bend (Beginning August 1st, 2017)

It was in the fall of 2016 that John first had a phone conversation with pastor Phil Kooistra of Grace Bible Church of Bend. After their conversation, John went directly to the elders at LFB and asked them to pray. After talking with Phil, John wanted to seek the Lord to see if the Spirit would be leading John to partner with Grace in planting a new gospel-centered church in Redmond. Over the next seven months, as the elders at Grace Bible Church and the elders at LFB sought the Lord’s leading, it became clear to both churches that John was the guy. Beginning August 1st, 2017, John will join the staff at Grace Bible Church of Bend as the “Church Plant Resident.” This will be a time of training and equipping for 12-18 months, with the goal of being sent to plant a church in Redmond. Grace Bible is a church that was planted six years ago, and has thrived under Phil’s leadership. It is part of Acts 29, which is a church planting network that desires to see churches planting churches.

Redmond Church Plant

Grace Bible Church of Bend currently has a group of people who travel from Redmond to attend church in Bend. The hope is that some of those from Redmond attending Grace Bible will partner with the McKays in planting the Redmond Church. The McKays have already sold their house in Lebanon and purchased one in Redmond. They will be fully transitioned to Redmond by August 1st, 2017. The continued spread of the gospel in Central Oregon will only be possible through the grace of God, the leading of the Holy Spirit, and the partnership of believers working together for the sake of the gospel.
